Holy Crap, Eagles! · Jan 19, 10:27 AM
We finally managed to make it up to the Skagit River to see the eagles! There are fewer of them this year than there often are – all those floods washed all the dead salmon away, so there isn’t as much for the eagles to eat. But we still found some!
We had a wonderful drive up to the river along Rt. 530. Some of the areas we drove through still had well over a foot of snow – it was impressive. There were also some amazing patches of fog along the way. Thanks to some advice from Juergen, we found a great place to park the car along the river, and were immediately rewarded with views of eagles. One adult was sitting in a tree, and at least two, maybe three juvenile eagles were flying in and out of the trees around him. Apparently they don’t get their characteristic white heads until they’re five years old. We watched them for a while, and Jonathan got some really good photos.
After that, we drove up and down the river, finding parking spaces and watching for more eagles, but we never got as close a view as we did with that first eagle. It was an amazingly warm and sunny day – we had come prepared for frigid temperatures, but it was around 50, so it was a wonderful day to sit next to a river and wait for eagles to come and go.
On our way home, we followed the Skagit River all the way to Puget Sound, and saw lots more lovely landscapes.
